  1. Choose your method using the tabs at the top: Roll 4d6, Standard Array, or Point Buy.

  3. (Roll 4d6) Use each row’s dropdown to assign that rolled score to your preferred ability score (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA). Each stat can only be assigned once.
  4. (Standard Array) Use each stat’s dropdown to assign one of the six standard values: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Each value can only be used once.

  6. Select your race in the Racial Bonus section to automatically apply official racial ability score increases to your final scores.
  7. Review the Summary Panel at the bottom for all six ability scores, modifiers, initiative, passive perception, and class suggestions.
  8. Copy or Print your final stat block using the action buttons below the summary.
🎲 DM’S TIP

Not sure which method to choose? Most home games use 4d6 Drop Lowest for a more heroic feel. Point Buy is preferred in organized play (like D&D Adventurers League) for fairness. Standard Array is the fastest option for new players.

How D&D 5e Ability Scores & Modifiers Work

Every D&D 5e character is defined by six ability scores: Strength (physical power), Dexterity (agility and reflexes), Constitution (endurance and health), Intelligence (knowledge and memory), Wisdom (perception and insight), and Charisma (force of personality). Scores typically range from 3 to 20 for player characters, though powerful magic or items can push them higher — up to 30 for legendary creatures. Each score generates a modifier, the number you actually add to your dice rolls for attacks, saving throws, and skill checks.

Modifier = ⌊ (Score − 10) ÷ 2 ⌋    (always round DOWN)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a D&D stat calculator?

A D&D stat calculator is an online tool that helps players generate and assign the six core ability scores — Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma — for their D&D 5e characters. It automates calculations like dice rolls, point costs, modifiers, and racial bonuses so you can focus on building your character.

What are the 6 ability scores in D&D 5e?

The six ability scores in D&D 5e are Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON), Intelligence (INT), Wisdom (WIS), and Charisma (CHA). Each score generates a modifier that affects your attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and many other aspects of gameplay.

How does 4d6 drop lowest work in D&D?

Roll four six-sided dice (4d6), discard the lowest result, and sum the remaining three. This gives scores between 3 and 18, with an average around 12.2 — slightly higher than a pure 3d6 roll. Repeat this six times to generate all ability scores, then assign them to your preferred stats.

What is the standard array in D&D 5e?

The standard array is a fixed set of six pre-determined ability score values: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8. You assign each number to one of the six ability scores in any order. This method ensures all players start with equal total stats, making it ideal for balanced play.

How does the D&D 5e point buy system work?

Point buy gives you 27 points to spend on ability scores, all starting at 8. Raising a score costs points based on a set table — scores 8–13 cost 1 point each per increase, while 14 costs 2 extra (7 total) and 15 costs 2 more (9 total). You cannot go above 15 before racial bonuses.

How do you calculate ability score modifiers in D&D 5e?

Subtract 10 from your ability score and divide by 2, always rounding down. For example, a score of 16 gives a +3 modifier ((16−10)÷2=3), while a score of 9 gives a −1 modifier ((9−10)÷2=−0.5, rounded down to −1). Modifiers range from −5 (score 1) to +10 (score 30).

What ability scores are most important in D&D 5e?

It depends on your class. Fighters and Barbarians prioritize Strength or Dexterity. Wizards need high Intelligence. Clerics and Druids favor Wisdom. Bards, Sorcerers, and Warlocks rely on Charisma. Constitution is universally important for all classes as it increases HP and concentration checks.

Can ability scores go above 20 in D&D 5e?

Yes, but it requires special means. The standard ability score cap is 20 for player characters, raised by Ability Score Improvements at certain levels. However, magical items, class features, and spells can push scores beyond 20. Some monsters have scores as high as 30 (the absolute maximum in 5e).
